The Cabildo of Fuerteventura expect to reach two million tourists to the island for 2012, 1.6 million have passed through the airport to date this year.
Minister of Tourism for the island, Blas Acosta explained that "the promotional work in the European markets are crucial to maintain the positive trend despite the effects of the economic crisis". The forecast is based on advance bookings from leading tour operators for the winter season, especially in northern Europe and Scandinavia.
International travellers totalled 1,233,945 between January and September, the best month for arrivals was March with 159,295 and the worst May with 112,102 passengers. Data captured by AENA revealed that Germany provides the largest quantity of travellers (520,000) followed by 322,000 from the United Kingdom, 84,000 from France, 59,000 from Poland, 36,000 Netherlands, 29,000 Ireland, 28,000 Switzerland, 27,000 Denmark, Sweden and Belgium have in the region of 20,000 passengers each. Other countries connecting with Fuerteventura but on a smaller scale include 12,000 Austria, 7,000 Finland, 6,000 Luxembourg, 6,000 Norway, just under 4,000 for Portugal and Czech Republic, 233 from Cape Verde and 40 from Morocco.
